Eat. Listen. Discuss.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a worldwide phenomenon. It’s found in over 169 countries. It’s run in tens of thousands of schools, prisons, homes and churches of all denominations. It’s given more than 20 million people the opportunity to explore the meaning of life.

This course is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the Christian faith that gives participants an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a friendly, honest environment.

Alpha is fun, relaxed and totally non-pressured (that’s probably why over 20 million people around the world have already done it!)

Listen, learn, discuss, and discover. Ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is off limits.

Each Alpha course session begins with food, followed by a short talk looking at a different aspect of the Christian faith. After that, there is dessert and a time for discussion in a friendly small group.

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for everyone, welcoming people from all backgrounds, religions and viewpoints. It’s a place where no question about life or God is too simple.

Alpha is for everyone, especially:

  • Those who have given up on church
  • Those wanting to investigate Christianity
  • Those who are new to the Christian faith
  • Those wanting to grow in understanding and faith
  • For those that know the Lord and feel like they have a close relationship with Him.
  • For those who have found themselves asking what is the point of life? / Why is there suffering in the world? / What happens when we die? / Is forgiveness possible?

Are you currently in a small group?

If your small group/growth group hasn’t participated in ALPHA yet, we would encourage you to join us for this time on Tuesday evenings and not study a topic or meet at your regular meeting time.  We don’t encourage you do to both.

What to expect

Cost: There is no charge for the Alpha course, although we would like our congregation to help with the costs of the books and meals through their donations when receiving their books and meals.

We expect a very large number of people participating. We want to encourage you to invite friends that don’t know about Christ or don’t have a congregation they call home. We would love for them to experience all this at no cost.

We would appreciate it if our congregation would pay a suggested $5 for each meal and $5 for the book.

Weekly Schedule: Each Tuesday evening we will promptly start at 6pm and end at 8pm.

6–6:40pm Dinner

6:40–7:15pm Teaching Time

7:15–7:25pm Stretch Break/Grab Dessert

7:25–8pm Discussion of Topic in small groups.

Retreat Time: October 16-17, 2015

As you prepare to attend and participate in the upcoming Alpha Experience, questions may arise.  We have attempted to include questions you might have.  Also, during the weeks leading up to Alpha beginning we will continue to grow this list of questions.   Please trust that our answers are for the good of you and others having the very best Alpha experience.   If this time doesn’t work for you to attend and participate, we will be offering more opportunities in the future.

Weekly Expectations
Q:  What does an evening look like regarding the schedule for class participants?
A:   Tuesday nights
6–6:40pm Dinner
6:45–7:15pm Teaching Time
7:15–7:25pm Stretch Break/Grab Dessert
7:25–8pm Discussion of Topic in small groups.

Q:  Is there a certain age group that will be participating in Alpha?
A:  Teens & Adults of all ages.

Q:  If I bring a friend to ALPHA will we be able to sit at the same table? (what if they’re not the same age/gender)
A:  Yes you will.  If you register in advance we will place you together.  Be sure to write their name down as the person you want to sit with as well have them register with your name they want to sit with.

Q:  What if I can’t come until 7pm?
A:  It might be better for you to wait until another session starts at a different time or day/night of the week.  The whole experience is contingent on your attendance every week and the entire evening, 6-8pm.

Q:  What is the book about?  Do we have to read it to participate?  Do I need to purchase it?
A:   No, you don’t need to read it to participate.  No, you don’t need to purchase it.  If finances are the reason for not getting the book, go ahead and take one.   Your relationship with Christ is more important than the price of the book.   We want you to have any tools you need.   The book is very simple, with an outline for taking notes and having the questions in advance.

Q:  Once Alpha gets started, could I invite a friend?
A:  That would be something you would need to feel comfortable with.   The first two weeks of Alpha it is open to everyone.   After that we call it a closed group.   The reason why is that people are beginning to build friendships in the groups and beginning to build a trust that they can discuss their own views.   Each week the teaching builds upon the next week.  Our concern would be that if new people are added to a group after the group has formed, they might not be on the same page as the rest of the group.  Would your friend feel comfortable in a group discussion with people they don’t know?   If you believe they would be comfortable, ask your group what they think.   We don’t want to keep anyone away from learning about Christianity.

There will be childcare Wednesday nights this fall.

Costs Involved:

Q:  If I am a member, am I required to pay for my guest?
A:  No, there are no requirements for anyone.   We are expecting a large group of people participating.   We are hoping our regular attenders would pay for their own expenses if possible to help defray the costs that will occur.  If anyone is unable to pay, please do NOT let that stand in the way.  If you are able to pay for anything for your guest and want to, please do.  But no one is required.  As a church family we are sharing this information.   We don’t want any guests or attenders to feel obligated in anyway.

Q:  What is the time for the retreat?
A:  The retreat will take place on October 16-17

Q:  Where will the retreat be held?
A:  At the time of writing this answer we do not know how many people will be registering for the experience. Due to not knowing we are unable to secure an offsite location at this time.  Once the ALPHA experience begins we will attempt to find an offsite location.  If we are unable to, we will host it here in our building.   You are able to go home and sleep at night.

Q:  Will there be childcare for my children during the retreat?
A:  Due to the time/length involved in the retreat we are unable to offer care for your children.

Do you have any questions that are not answered?
