Guest blogger: Darlene Rohlfsen- Shoe Tree Success
A couple of weeks ago, Pastor Dan encouraged us (maybe even challenged us) to contribute to a Lutheran Family Services (LFS) ‘shoe tree.’ “Bring a pair of shoes that will fit a child age five and under and chuck ‘em onto the tree!” When King of Kings is asked to give, you give generously!! One of LFS’ many programs is the Center for Healthy Families, where parents with children up to age 5 earn points for doing healthy family activities (continuing education, immunizations, well-baby check-ups, reading to their kids, home visits, parenting classes, etc.) and then use those points to purchase needed items – diapers, formula, clothes, and SHOES!! There are currently three Centers – one in Council Bluffs, one in Fremont, and one in North Omaha (30th & Lake,) which is where the 231 pairs (approximately $3,500.00 value) of shoes donated by you will be used.
On top of those children receiving some really awesome and fun shoes, the shoe tree was auctioned at the Fandango fundraiser last Friday night, where it sold for $6,500! That money will also go to purchase items to stock the boutique where participating parents spend their points. This is one of my very favorite programs at LFS – it helps families to get started on the right path to hopefully steer clear of problems instead of waiting until there are bad habits to break and problems to be solved. There have been so very many success stories of young families who “made it” and provided a much better life for their families than would have happened without the grace and mercy of God, their own hard work and support from LFS and generous donors like you.
THANK YOU King of Kings – I am so blessed to be a part of this church and also so very excited to walk through this life with you!!
